Nangang has made an impressive shift from an old industrial brownfield to a thriving center for smart technology, innovation, and sustainable industries, making it a key development zone in Taipei. This transformation highlights the smart integration of Urban Renewal, Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), and Smart Growth Management strategies.
This paper dives into the key forces driving Nangang’s industrial land regeneration. It looks at how urban renewal helps breathe new life into underutilized industrial areas, how the TOD model boosts space efficiency and accessibility, and how smart growth strategies create a more sustainable, tech-driven urban environment. By tapping into rail-based economic growth, green infrastructure, and digital innovation, Nangang is evolving into a low-carbon, resilient, and globally competitive smart city.
Findings show that combining urban renewal with TOD increases land value, enhances urban functions, and strengthens regional economic and social resilience. On top of that, adopting smart growth strategies accelerates industrial transformation, promotes public-private collaboration, and ensures long-term sustainability.
To wrap things up, this paper offers strategic recommendations for Nangang’s future growth, providing insights for Taipei and other cities looking to turn industrial brownfields into vibrant, innovation-driven urban hubs.
